ASC sponsored lecture given by Margalit Fox entitled "The Riddle of the Labyrinth: The decipherment of Linear B
Margalit Fox gave a lecture on 1st November in the Pusey Room entitled “The Riddle of the Labyrinth: The decipherment of Linear B”, based on her acclaimed new book The Riddle of the Labyrinth: The Quest to Crack an Ancient Code and the Uncovering of a Lost Civilisation. The lecture was partially funded by the ASC. Margalit Fox is an award-winning journalist and linguist, and is a senior writer for the New York Times.
Margalit Fox’s talk discussed the discovery and eventual decipherment of the Linear B script found by Arthur Evans at the site of Knossos. While describing the processes involved in decoding such a script, her focus was on the role of Alice Kober, a Brooklyn classicist, whose meticulous research and recording significantly contributed to the final decipherment by Michael Ventris in 1952.
The lecture was followed by a drinks reception and a book signing.
